About Me

My name is Henrique, and I am the leader of LGM

I am a Molecular Biologist graduated by the State University of Campinas, Brazil (1998). DPhil in Biochemistry by the University of Oxford, UK (2002), where I dedicated myself studying chromosome integrity and site-specific recombination in the group of Professor David Sherratt. My first postdoc was on bacterial chromosome segregation in the group of Professor Jeff Errington (2002-2004), Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, Oxford. My second postdoc was investigating protein function based on structure at the LNLS-Campinas, Brazil (2004-2006). During the years of 2006-2009, I was a FAPESP Young Investigator working with cell division and chromosome segregation having Xanthomonas citri as model organism. I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology, Institute of Biosciences, UNESP-Rio Claro, Brazil.

My research group is focused on the investigation of various aspects of bacterial cell biology, with a greater emphasis on the chromosome dynamics and cell division of the phytopathogen Xanthomonas citri, the causal agent of citrus canker. More recently, we started looking into HLB, and how we can contribute for a better control of this disease that is the major threat for citriculture nowadays. Doing science in a multidisciplinary approach is our strategy to unveil some of the essential processes that take place inside bacterial cells. After, the information gathered helps us to develop better methods to control pathogens with lesser impact to hosts/environment.
